Job Description
Global Women Empowerment Development Ethiopia (GWEDE) is a national, women-led and community-rooted civil society organization established in 2022.GWEDE works to advance gender equality, women’s and girls’ empowerment, food and nutrition security, resilient livelihoods, inclusive economic empowerment, WASH, protection, peacebuilding, and sustainable community development in Ethiopia.

About the LEVEL UP Project
LEVEL UP is a three-year initiative designed to make Borena’s food system more inclusive, climate-resilient, nutrition-sensitive, and market-oriented.
The project strengthens women’s and female youth’s economic participation, leadership, resilience, and agency through three value chains:
- Poultry
- Irrigation-based horticulture
- Small ruminants
LEVEL UP operates across Arero, Yabello, and Gomole woredas.
Position: Field Accountant
Purpose of the Position
The Field Accountant is responsible for accurate and compliant financial management at field level. The position maintains complete books of account, ensures compliance with GWEDE policies, donor requirements, and Ethiopian financial and tax regulations, and provides timely financial information for decision-making, budget management, and reporting.
The Field Accountant also maintains strong internal controls, supervises and reviews the Cashier, and ensures proper segregation of duties between record-keeping, cash handling, and authorization.
Reporting To
GWEDE Senior-Finance and Human Resource Officer – Head Office, with day-to-day coordination with the field team.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date field office books of account.
- Review and process payment requests, procurement and travel documentation, and staff/participant/event payments.
- Prepare and post journals and maintain general and subsidiary ledgers.
- Record transactions in GWEDE accounting software on a timely basis.
- Conduct monthly bank and cash reconciliations.
- Reconcile advances and receivables and follow up on timely liquidation.
- Ensure compliance with Ethiopian tax and statutory requirements, including income tax, withholding tax, and pension obligations.
- Monitor expenditure against approved budgets and work plans.
- Prepare budget-versus-actual analyses and flag significant variances.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial and expenditure reports.
- Consolidate field financial information for Head Office and donor reporting.
- Manage cash forecasting and field fund requests/replenishments.
- Supervise, guide, and review the work of the Cashier.
- Ensure proper segregation of duties and compliance with financial policies.
- Maintain secure and orderly physical and electronic financial records.
- Support procurement by verifying documentation, budget codes, and payment compliance.
- Support internal and external audits and follow up on audit recommendations.
- Maintain the field office fixed-asset and inventory registers.
- Support physical asset counts and verification.
- Strengthen financial systems, internal controls, and financial literacy at field level.
- Perform other finance-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- BA/BSc in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant accounting experience.
- NGO and donor-funded project experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial controls, budgeting, donor compliance, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as Peachtree/Sage or similar.
- Strong MS Excel skills.
- Sound knowledge of Ethiopian tax and statutory requirements.
Preferred / Added Advantage
- Fluency in Afaan Oromo and Amharic.
- Working knowledge of English.
- Experience managing field-level finances in remote or pastoral settings.
- High level of integrity, accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
- ACCA/CPA part-qualification is an advantage.
