Junior Rural Development / Dryland Farming Adviser – GIZ Ethiopia

Key Responsibilities

• Support technical discussions on farming system design, crop and tree planting, and livestock production.
• Advise communities on implementing dryland agricultural practices.
• Identify suitable measures for moisture harvesting and dryland farming.
• Support selection of appropriate crops and livestock practices.
• Assist with intervention cost assessments and implementation planning.
• Support implementation of dryland and flood-based farming activities.
• Prepare technical reports on project activities.
• Support participatory community planning processes.
• Assist project communication activities, especially related to DVRPU.
• Support establishment and strengthening of Watershed User Cooperatives (WUCs).
• Assist cooperative registration, legal compliance, and field monitoring activities.
• Support data collection on rainfall, flooding, and productivity.
• Guide farmland zoning and management according to moisture gradients.
• Support training on:
  • Soil moisture assessment
  • Crop selection
  • Agronomic practices
  • Farming system management
• Collaborate with GIZ Agriculture and Rural Development programs to promote soil health and agroecological practices.

Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in:
  • Dryland Agriculture
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Rural Development
  • Related fields

Experience

• Fresh graduates up to 1 year of experience in:
  • Community-based agricultural extension
  • Watershed development
  • Dryland farming

Additional Experience:

• Experience with participatory training methods and adult learning principles.
• Knowledge of flood-based farming, water harvesting, or soil-water conservation is desirable.

Required Skills & Competencies

• Strong motivation, proactivity, self-discipline, integrity, and accountability.
• Ability to work effectively in a team.
• Experience or knowledge in cooperative management and DVRPU is an advantage.
• Willingness to travel regularly and work in rural areas.
• Excellent English and Afarigna/Somaligna communication, reporting, and presentation skills are mandatory.
