Job Description
Marie Stopes International Ethiopia (MSIE) is seeking a qualified and experienced Nurse to provide high-quality nursing and clinical services at its MSIE Centre in Bahir Dar.
Key Responsibilities
General Nursing Duties
- Provide nursing services within the defined scope of practice based on patient assessment and care plans.
- Take vital signs and perform routine nursing interventions.
- Apply aseptic techniques and maintain infection prevention and control standards.
- Conduct specimen collection and monitor patients' nutritional intake.
- Administer medications and observe and document therapeutic effects.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care.
- Monitor patients' progress and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
- Consult and collaborate with appropriate members of the healthcare team.
- Provide reproductive health and family planning education to patients and their families.
Safe Abortion Nursing
- Provide safe abortion services in accordance with applicable clinical guidelines and professional standards.
- Support clients undergoing pregnancy termination procedures as instructed by the appropriate clinician.
- Provide emergency care and respond to complications such as bleeding, nausea, and vomiting.
- Counsel clients on pregnancy prevention and the appropriate use of reproductive health services.
Instrument / Theatre Nursing
- Prepare surgical instruments, equipment, and medical supplies for procedures.
- Assist doctors and surgical teams as a scrub or circulating nurse.
- Ensure surgical instruments and supplies are properly stored, maintained, and replenished.
- Establish appropriate reorder levels and ensure timely availability of theatre supplies.
Operation Theatre Nursing
- Prepare patients for surgery and assist with positioning and pre-operative procedures.
- Prepare instruments and equipment required for surgical procedures.
- Assist surgical teams during operations.
- Clean and sterilize operating rooms and surgical instruments.
- Transport patients safely by wheelchair or stretcher when required.
- Transfer messages, reports, requisitions, and specimens between departments.
- Maintain patient rooms and contribute to patient comfort and care.
Antenatal Care
- Monitor pregnant women's vital signs during antenatal follow-up.
- Conduct relevant laboratory procedures as required and report findings to the responsible clinician.
- Provide counselling and support to pregnant women experiencing physiological or social difficulties.
- Monitor and document patients' conditions and care.
- Provide first aid during emergency situations.
- Perform other nursing procedures as directed by the supervisor.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain high clinical and infection-prevention standards.
- Apply universal precautions to minimize infection risks.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of medical supplies and other assets under custody.
- Participate in stock-taking and audits.
- Prepare and submit periodic reports.
- Report clinical incidents promptly according to MSIE guidelines.
- Perform other related duties assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- BSc or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
Experience
- Two years of experience for BSc holders or four years of experience for Diploma holders, preferably as a junior nurse.
Required Skills and Competencies

- Strong counselling skills.
- Ability to make logical and timely decisions.
- Understanding of quality healthcare principles and practices.
- Awareness of relevant government, MSI, and MSIE regulations.
