Global Women Empowerment Development Ethiopia (GWEDE) is a national, women-led and community-rooted civil society organization established in 2022. GWEDE works to advance gender equality, women’s and girls’ empowerment, food and nutrition security, resilient livelihoods, inclusive economic empowerment, WASH, protection, peacebuilding, and sustainable community development in Ethiopia.

About the LEVEL UP Project

LEVEL UP is a three-year initiative designed to make Borena’s food system more inclusive, climate-resilient, nutrition-sensitive, and market-oriented.

The project strengthens the economic participation, leadership, resilience, and agency of pastoralist and agro-pastoralist women and female youth across three value chains:

  • Poultry
  • Irrigation-based horticulture
  • Small ruminants

The project operates in Arero, Yabello, and Gomole woredas.

Position Summary

The Community Facilitators – Field will serve as the frontline link between communities, woreda structures, and the project team. Each facilitator will be assigned to one of the three target woredas and will lead community mobilization, participant selection, group formation, gender-transformative engagement, and community-level implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead community sensitization and mobilization at kebele level
  • Build relationships with communities, customary and religious leaders, and local government
  • Facilitate transparent identification and selection of women and female youth participants
  • Support participatory assessments and inclusive selection of horticulture sites
  • Organize women and female youth into producer groups, cooperatives, and enterprises
  • Mobilize female youth into producer, aggregation, and marketing enterprises
  • Support formation and strengthening of VSLAs and savings groups
  • Coordinate community-level implementation of value chain, enterprise, nutrition, and gender activities
  • Facilitate access to productive inputs and conduct post-distribution follow-up
  • Support demonstration and learning sites
  • Link participants with business development services, mentors, cooperatives, buyers, input suppliers, and financial service providers
  • Conduct household engagement, couples' dialogue, and community conversations promoting equitable gender roles
  • Establish and facilitate community-led Social Analysis and Action (SAA) platforms
  • Engage men, elders, religious leaders, customary Gadaa leaders, and other community influencers in gender-transformative dialogue
  • Identify and support male champions and community role models
  • Support women and female youth to take leadership roles in producer groups, cooperatives, and community structures
  • Facilitate women's participation in consultation forums, water-user associations, and governance structures
  • Support mentorship and peer-learning opportunities for emerging women leaders
  • Mobilize households for market-based nutrition campaigns and behaviour-change activities
  • Disseminate culturally appropriate nutrition and IEC/BCC materials
  • Operate community feedback and complaints mechanisms and appropriately refer protection and safeguarding concerns
  • Collect accurate field data and maintain participant and activity records
  • Conduct regular community follow-up and document challenges, lessons, and good practices
  • Coordinate with woreda sector offices, development agents, extension and veterinary workers, cooperatives, and community structures
  • Serve as the primary link between communities, the field office, and the project team

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or BSc/BA in Rural Development, Agricultural Extension, Sociology, Gender Studies, Community Development, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with a Diploma or 2 years with a Degree in community facilitation, mobilization, or field implementation
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Residency in or strong familiarity with the assigned woreda and its communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Afaan Oromo is essential
  • Amharic language skills are an advantage
  • Experience with gender-transformative approaches, Social Analysis and Action (SAA), or women's empowerment programming
