Job Description
Medical Teams International is seeking qualified Mental Health Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) Officers to provide quality mental health and psychosocial support services for refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities. The successful candidate will support the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare through direct patient care
Key Responsibilities
Mental Health & Clinical Services
- Provide Psychological First Aid (PFA), emotional support, and structured psychosocial interventions.
- Assess and manage common mental health conditions using WHO mhGAP guidelines.
- Refer severe mental health cases for specialized care.
- Deliver culturally sensitive mental health and psychosocial support services.
- Administer and monitor psychotropic medications appropriately.
- Collaborate with doctors, pharmacists, and health teams to ensure quality psychiatric care.
Capacity Building & Community Engagement
- Train frontline healthcare workers on mental health service integration.
- Conduct community awareness sessions to reduce stigma surrounding mental health.
- Facilitate psychoeducation sessions and support groups for patients, caregivers, and staff.
- Strengthen referral pathways and collaboration with community stakeholders.
Safeguarding & Compliance
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional ethics.
- Comply with safeguarding, protection, and accountability policies.
- Promote a safe and respectful environment for patients and staff.
- Support monitoring, reporting, and documentation activities.
- Perform additional duties assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications
Education
- BSc Degree in Psychiatry Nursing.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS).
- Experience in humanitarian or primary healthcare settings is preferred.
- Training on WHO mhGAP, Psychological First Aid (PFA), or trauma-informed care is required.
- Previous experience working with INGOs is an advantage.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of humanitarian standards (Sphere, CHS, Red Cross Code of Conduct).
- Strong understanding of mental health service delivery.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Fluency in Amharic and English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and in multicultural environments.
- Willingness to travel to challenging field locations.
